Here's how a playback singer from small-town West Bengal ended up with more monthly listeners than most global pop stars.
Born on 25 April 1987 in Jiaganj, a small town in West Bengal, Singh trained in Indian classical music from childhood — the tradition that underpins essentially everything he does vocally.

He entered a national televised singing competition as a teenager and did not win. He was eliminated.
What followed was years of unglamorous work — programming, arranging, assisting other music directors, and taking whatever session work existed. Not a montage. Actual years of being nobody in an industry that had already passed judgment on him.
The reality show result is worth sitting with, because it's the whole point of his career. The format is designed to identify the next big voice. It looked directly at him and said no.
Indian film music runs on playback singing — songs recorded by professional singers, then performed on screen by actors. It's a specialised craft, and for decades it favoured a particular kind of voice: powerful, ornamented, technically showy.

Singh's voice is the opposite. It's soft, slightly frayed at the edges, and built for intimacy rather than volume. He sings quietly in a tradition that rewarded singing loudly.
That turned out to be exactly what the material needed. Hindi film romance had shifted toward something more restrained and internal, and the older vocal style oversold it. Singh's restraint fit the writing.
The technical detail people underrate is his breath control. The catch in his voice on sustained notes sounds like emotion breaking through, and it is completely deliberate — a classically trained control of when to let the tone fray.
His streaming numbers are genuinely difficult to contextualise for anyone outside India. He has regularly ranked among the most-streamed artists on earth by monthly listeners — competing with global pop stars while singing almost entirely in Hindi.
Three structural reasons:
Volume of output. Bollywood produces an enormous number of films, each with multiple songs. A dominant playback singer accumulates a catalogue at a rate no Western pop artist approaches.
Films as distribution. Every song arrives attached to a film's marketing budget. The song promotes the film and the film promotes the song, and both reach audiences who were never seeking out music.
Catalogue longevity. Hindi film songs don't cycle out. Tracks from a decade ago remain in active playlist rotation at weddings, on radio and in daily listening in a way that Western chart pop generally doesn't.
Combine those and one singer with the right voice can accumulate a truly enormous listening base.
His concerts sell out at stadium scale across India and internationally, and the format is notably stripped back — less spectacle, more voice, with long stretches of him simply singing.
Off stage he is unusually private for someone at his level. He has largely avoided celebrity culture, keeps his family out of public view, and reportedly still spends significant time in West Bengal rather than relocating permanently to Mumbai.
That's a genuine outlier position. Bollywood runs on visibility, and most artists at his commercial level participate heavily in the surrounding celebrity economy. He substantially doesn't.
He is also reported to have directed considerable resources toward charitable work, again without much publicity around it.
Singh's success shifted what Bollywood thought a hit voice sounds like. The industry had a template; he didn't fit it, then dominated anyway, and the template moved.
He also demonstrated that a playback singer could be the draw. Historically the actor on screen was the star and the voice was credited but secondary. Singh's name on a track is now itself a marketing asset — a genuine shift in how the industry values singers.
