Do You Need to Watch Loki Before Avengers: Doomsday?

Short answer: yes. Of everything Marvel has released since Endgame, Loki is the single most important thing to watch before Avengers: Doomsday.

It is the show that created the multiverse, explained the rules, and then broke them. Nearly every multiverse event since traces back to it. Here's exactly what matters and what you can skip.

Why Loki Matters More Than the Other Shows

Most Marvel Disney+ shows are character stories. You can skip them and follow the films fine.

Loki is different. It's the show where the MCU's entire structure changed.

Season 1 introduced the Time Variance Authority — an organization that had been pruning alternate timelines to maintain a single "Sacred Timeline." That is the reveal that reframes everything: the MCU had been one branch of a multiverse the whole time, kept that way by force.

The finale is the pivot. The being controlling the TVA is killed, timeline pruning stops, and the multiverse branches uncontrolled. Every multiverse story Marvel has told since exists because of that single moment.

If you watch nothing else, watch that.

What You Actually Need — Episode by Episode

Loki ran two seasons, 12 episodes total, on Disney+. Both seasons have now ended, so there's no ongoing commitment.

If you have time for the whole thing, watch the whole thing — it's among Marvel's best television. If you're short on time, these are the load-bearing beats:

• Season 1, Episode 1 — establishes the TVA, the Sacred Timeline, and what a "variant" is. Non-negotiable.
• Season 1 finale — the multiverse is unleashed. This is the most consequential scene in post-Endgame Marvel.
• Season 2 finale — resolves Loki's arc and establishes how the branching timelines are being held together. Directly relevant to what Doomsday inherits.

The middle episodes are excellent but you can survive without them.

The Cast Worth Knowing

The names that carry over into wider MCU relevance:

• Tom Hiddleston as Loki
• Sophia Di Martino as Sylvie — a Loki variant, and the one who makes the crucial decision in the Season 1 finale
• Owen Wilson as Mobius
• Wunmi Mosaku as B-15
• Ke Huy Quan as O.B.

Sylvie matters most for Doomsday purposes. Her choice at the end of Season 1 is what opens the multiverse — an act with consequences that no character has yet been held accountable for.

What Else Should You Watch?

Beyond Loki, in rough order of importance:

• Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness — shows the multiverse in practice, introduces universe-hopping and the concept of incursions
• Spider-Man: No Way Home — the most emotionally effective multiverse story Marvel has told, and it establishes the stakes of universes colliding
• Deadpool & Wolverine — deals directly with the Fox X-Men universe and how those characters can exist alongside the MCU
• WandaVision — useful for Wanda's arc, less essential for the multiverse mechanics

You genuinely do not need to rewatch all 30-plus MCU films. If you've seen Infinity War and Endgame and you watch Loki, you'll follow Doomsday.

The One Thing to Understand Going In

If you take a single concept from all of this, make it incursions.

When two universes collide, both are destroyed. That's the rule established across the multiverse films, and it's the reason a multiverse story has genuine stakes rather than being an excuse for cameos.

A villain who can move between universes doesn't just threaten one world. He threatens all of them, and every collision he causes kills two at a time.

That's the framework Avengers: Doomsday is built on — and Loki is where it starts.
