The most talked-about thing about Avengers: Doomsday isn't Doctor Doom. It's the reports that the original Fox X-Men cast is coming back.

Here's what has actually been reported, why the multiverse makes it possible, and how much of it to believe.

The Short Answer

Reportedly, several actors from the 2000s Fox X-Men films are returning — the cast that defined those characters for a generation before Disney acquired Fox.

An important caveat up front: Marvel is notoriously secretive, casting reports frequently circulate before anything is official, and studios actively plant misdirection around films this size. Treat every name as reported until Marvel confirms it directly.

What is not in dispute is the mechanism. Marvel has spent years building the narrative machinery required to make this possible, and it now works.

How the Multiverse Makes This Work

This is the part that confuses people, and it's actually straightforward.

The Fox X-Men films were never part of the MCU. Different studio, different continuity, different rules. For two decades those characters legally and narratively could not appear alongside the Avengers.

Disney's acquisition of Fox solved the legal problem. The multiverse solved the story problem.

Because the MCU is now explicitly one universe among infinite others, the Fox films can simply be another universe. Nothing needs retconning. Those movies still happened — just not here.

That means an actor can return as the same character, from the same timeline, without Marvel having to explain away twenty years of continuity. The multiverse isn't a loophole. It's the whole point.

Deadpool & Wolverine Already Proved It

If you want evidence this approach works, Deadpool & Wolverine is the proof of concept.

Hugh Jackman returned as Wolverine years after that character's definitive send-off, and the film made it work by being explicit about the multiverse rather than dancing around it. It grossed enormously and was well received.

The film also dealt directly with the Fox universe as a place — a timeline with its own history and its own ending. That established the template Doomsday can now use at scale.

Cast of note from that film: Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman, Emma Corrin, Matthew Macfadyen and Dafne Keen, directed by Shawn Levy.

Why Marvel Is Doing This

There's a commercial logic and a creative one.

Commercially: the Fox X-Men films have twenty years of audience attachment. Bringing back the original actors converts nostalgia directly into ticket sales, and Marvel has watched exactly that work for other studios.

Creatively: the MCU has a scale problem. After Endgame, the emotional weight of a decade of build-up left with the characters who ended it. Legacy casting is a way to borrow accumulated meaning rather than spend years building it again.

The risk is real too. Nostalgia casting can substitute for storytelling — a cameo gets a cheer in the room and means nothing a week later. The films that make it land are the ones where the returning character has something to do.

What to Watch For

  • Official confirmation. Marvel typically announces casts at its own events. Until then, treat everything as reported.
  • Whether they get arcs or cameos. A returning character with three minutes of screen time is fan service. One with a story is legacy casting done properly.
  • How the film handles the Fox timeline's fate. If universes are colliding, someone's universe doesn't survive.
