Christopher Nolan followed an Oscar sweep for Oppenheimer by doing the least predictable thing available — adapting a three-thousand-year-old Greek poem.
The Odyssey stars Matt Damon as Odysseus, with a supporting cast that reads like a list of the most in-demand actors working. Here's everything confirmed.
The Plot — What Nolan Is Actually Adapting
The official synopsis: Odysseus, the legendary King of Ithaca, embarks on a long and perilous journey home following the Trojan War. Throughout the voyage he is forced to confront the whims of gods, mythological monsters, and trials that stretch both his cunning and his humanity to the breaking point.

That last clause is the Nolan part. Homer's Odysseus is celebrated for his cleverness, but the poem is genuinely brutal about what a decade of war and wandering does to a man — and about the cost paid by everyone waiting at home.
The structural fit is almost too neat. The Odyssey famously does not run in chronological order — it opens near the end, doubles back through flashback, and lets Odysseus narrate his own past. Nolan has built an entire career on exactly that kind of fractured chronology.
He is not imposing his style on this material. The material already works the way he thinks.

Damon as Odysseus is the choice worth sitting with. Damon has spent his career playing intelligent men who talk their way out of danger — Bourne, Ripley, the astronaut in The Martian solving his way off a planet. Odysseus is the origin point for that entire archetype. The casting is almost recursive.
Tom Holland is widely expected to play Telemachus, Odysseus's son — a young man who has grown up without his father and must decide what to do about the men occupying his home. It would be by far the most demanding dramatic role of Holland's career.
Note the overlap with the rest of this year's release slate: Holland is also in the new Spider-Man, and Pattinson is in both this and Nolan's orbit alongside his own franchise work. A handful of actors are carrying an enormous share of 2026.
One caveat worth stating plainly: cast listings on aggregator sites are frequently updated before roles are formally announced. Treat specific character assignments as reported rather than confirmed until the studio says so.
Why Nolan Making This Is a Big Deal
Nolan is one of very few directors alive who can get a studio to fund an original-scale epic with no existing franchise attached, at a budget where failure would genuinely hurt.
Oppenheimer earned that latitude. A three-hour dialogue-heavy drama about theoretical physics grossed near a billion dollars and swept the Academy Awards. After that, the answer to almost any pitch he makes is yes.
He has reportedly continued his practice of shooting on large-format film with practical effects prioritised over digital work. For a story involving Cyclopes, sirens and shipwrecks, that constraint is the interesting creative problem — it forces solutions that a fully digital production would never bother finding.
The Odyssey has also never had a definitive screen adaptation, despite being one of the foundational stories in Western literature. Everyone knows the pieces — the Trojan Horse, the Cyclops, the sirens, Penelope's suitors — and almost no one has seen them assembled properly at scale.
Release Date and IMAX
A precise date has not been publicly locked. Nolan's films historically land in July, and Universal has been protective of his release windows.
If you have any choice in the matter, see it in the largest format available. Nolan composes specifically for IMAX and the difference on his films is not marketing — Oppenheimer and Dunkirk both lost meaningful visual information on standard screens.

What to Watch For
How much of the war he shows. Homer's poem starts after Troy falls. If Nolan dramatises the war directly, that's a significant structural departure.
Penelope's screen time. The poem gives her real agency and cunning. A version that reduces her to someone waiting would be a genuine loss.
Runtime. Nolan's recent films run long, and this story has more incident than Oppenheimer had.
